Parker Brothers finished composite barrels in a manner that would highlight the contrast of the light iron and the dark steel. Common belief is that these were finished in “black & white” but the European barrels were finished to give a light brown/dark brown appearance and were considered to be “browned.”
There are many, many entries in the Parker Bros. Factory records that make reference to guns sent back to “re-brown” the barrels. This term is actually inaccurate in reference to American barrels and the term probably was borrowed from the British term for finishing or refinishing barrels. .

I would have tried acetone but the mineral spirits may loosen it.
