Went to my lease near Hedley, TX today. Was by myself. Had a dog on the ground at 1:30 and hunted till 6:30. Moved five coveys, most of them along the river. This was all on foot, no four wheelers or mules.
I carried my Parker Reproduction 28 gauge, straight grip, double triggers, splinter forend, 28" barrels, 5lbs 5oz, choked 20 thou and 40 thou. The Parker Reproduction 28s are top tier upland guns in my opinion. I was shooting RSTs 2-1/2" 5/8oz #9s.
High of about 30F. The Salt Fork of the Red River was mostly frozen over. Red found an ice-free spot to get a drink and cool his belly. I am always amazed at how dogs can lay down in cold water on a cold day when they are hunting.
Red went on point. A nice covey flushed. The little Repro brought down a hen and Red retrieved it:
A little later and we took a bob:
Had a great day shooting - five shots bagged five birds.
