Grade 2 underlifter

Was a successful bidder last week at a local auction on this grade 2 underlifter 12 ga. It fits the book specs., locks up very tight and the bores are like new. The only flaw is the wood chip to the rear of the left lock. It will be going Turkey hunting with me in about 6 weeks.

Nice gun. There are a few people on this forum that can fix that chip so that you will never no it was there.

Very nice and honest gun. I really like those earlier grade 2 lifters. The sculpted bolsters really set them off. Engraving could have been a little nicer on these, but you can't complain. I am trying to finish up a full restoration on a nearly identical gun.
Your barrels look to be in exceptional condition. Exterior finish is great!

The level of engraving detail, composition and style was dependent on a few different factors during the period of lifter Parkers. It is likely that the composition and style was generally determined by the chief engraver at the time and his 'reign' usually encompassed a decade or more in duration. He was the one who decided what could be done in the way of the level of engraving for the $$ amount assigned by Parker Bros. for a particular grade. Management determined the $$ amount at which they could sell a gun and, consequently, what they would pay, at each work station, for a completed gun.
We see various styles, levels of engraving generally segmented by the terms of chief engravers. Some are distinctly nicer than others but each has its own charm and beauty.

I really like the border engraving on these grade 2 lifters. I just think the scroll flourishes could be a little finer or more detailed.

Some of the lower grades lock plates were actually stamped to appear to be engraved.

The subject Grade 2 at the top of this thread is actually engraved but the picture below is an example of (roll) stamped engraving and could also be a Grade 2 but more likely is a Grade 1.
