Default In Our Little Town

Nothing much ever seems to happen here in Andover, MA but in last Thursday's local newspaper, the Andover Townsman, I read something I have never read in this paper or any of the locals. There was actually a short, although a trifle inaccurate, blurb about the founding of Skeet here in the twenties by Davies, owner of Glen Rock Kennels. This was a real shocker to me as I never expected anything related to guns, shooting or hunting would appear in this paper.

Dean, They must have run out of any news to print, so as to not make up any they ran a fine article, call them and ask that they do it more often. Gary

Gary, several years ago I contacted the head curator of the Andover Historical Society asking if he knew anything about Davies, Glen Rock Kennels, W.H. Foster or any of that. He said he knew practically nothing about it but had heard something. I told him that I knew where it all began and had some history of the birth of skeet and asked if he could help me through his position of head curator and I shared with him all that I knew. months went by.... I contacted him again and weeks went by without a response. I contacted him again and he said he had been compelled to put the whole thing on "the back burner" as he had more pressing issues. Many months later I found out through other sources that he had been working on it right along... I guess he wanted an exclusive. This is when I decided to work alone and began to try to contact the owner of the property that was formerly the Davies property. Unfortunately she passed away and I contacted her heirs (with some significant help from my daughter who informed me of the estate sale) and was able to gain access to the property and the old kennel houses. I wrote very briefly of it on pg. 42 of the Summer 2012 issue of Parker Pages.

dean this is a surprise but a good one...looks like you have had some very history making people in your home town..too bad about the curator not helping you ...too much jelosy in the world..i hope that this is the beginning maybe for a turn around for the shooting and hunting world..through efforts like you and others its slowly may come full circle... i thourghly enjoyed the article..if you see the editor of paper tell him we all would like to see more of this and less of that... my thanks... charlie

Dean, Just wondering, do you know if the head curator of the Andover Historical Society was the author of the news article? I don't even see a name anywhere on the posted images.

Dean, interesting story, and interesting (to me) that you line in Andover, MA as I live in Andover, KS.

The latest NRA "Shooting Sportsman" has the history of skeet too. Seems to be a popular topic?
