Default upland forecast

a mixed bag presented-

http://pointingdogjournal.com/commun...ter-forecasts/

for grouse -

NY DEC is AWOL

but faintly good news for PA

no mention of the Northeast Kingdom, so no sense going all the way up there - right Dean?

Wisconsin looks like the winner in the forecast

woodcock is guess work anyway with no drumming or nest count possible and no wing count due to covid

mostly - its a lot like listening to the weatherman - they can be wrong and still keep going

Thanks for sharing. Pretty accurate. Arizona was hit extremely hard.

I have always taken the good years with the bad. There have been fewer good years in the last 10 - 14 years but in the slimmest times a few flights of woodcock have dropped in to save the season. We’ve never had years with no grouse bagged at all but scary close to it sometimes.
There’s no way in the world I’d forsake the covers of my youth even if there were no grouse at all - I still have the memories and oh, what memories!

Give me a warm fire in the woodstove, a drink to sip, my storehouse of memories and someone to share them with. It’s always worth going to grouse camp no matter.

But I DO love to shoot grouse!!

I agree with you about the memories - and traditions do matter

In the part of NY where I grew up hunting with my Dad and still want to hunt with the ghosts of setters long gone the story is different. Grouse are mostly a memory.

but it's sad to have a young dog in the woods not gaining experience. Last year I began to make the very long drive to the north country just for that reason. We found some birds. this year I may add trips back to some old haunts in north central PA and farther afield in the Finger Lakes - just don't calculate the cost per pound of the birds

I can reminisce, Tweed cannot

I put up more grouse last year than I have in the past 5-7 years so I ignore forecasts. A hunting partner of mine put up even more than I did and we agreed it was an uptick year in NY and PA. Maybe we just got lucky. So that being said I ignore forecasts.
