Milton, They are wonderful well built guns. It's a shame there weren't more of them.

Wallace Labisky had a series of articles on side-by-side shotguns in Shooting Times magazine back in the 1960's. Number ten in the series covered the Colt doubles. It was in the Shooting Times, Volume 7, No. 6, June 1966. I'm sure some of the dealers in books and paper that advertise in the Gun List can probably come up with a copy.
Don Hardin did an article on Colt doubles in The Double Gun Journal, Volume Four, Issue 2, pages 119 - 122. Looking at the repro 1884 E.C. Meechum catalogue, they were selling off early Colt hammer doubles with no rib extension at a discount, and also showing the new version with a dollshead rib extension. |

I don't own a Colt SxS and have never shot one, but I have begun to appreciate them. Some time ago I was in Dan Cullity's shop out on Cape Cod and he had a Colt SxS in for some minor work. I had him receive a little GHE 28ga for me and he give it a professional once over before I took position, so we were talking Parkers. Some where along the line he picked up the Colt and made some comment along the lines that he liked the Colt SxS the best of all American makers. He gave a few reasons, most along the line of how they are engineered.
Dan is a master gunsmith and does fantastic work, so his comment made a real impression with me. I had never given any thought to Colt shotguns before this, but since then I have been watching for them. I never seem to see them; they are far and few between in the places I frequent. |

this particular gun is in the 8000 range serial # . if I bought it though id have to hold off a little longer for a parkers 10 ga . though maybe the colts are more rare ? |
