Do you wax your repro wood?

Anyone apply wax to the wood stock?

The wood on a Repro is finished with some kind of incredibly tough finish that even commercial paint stripper won’t touch.
You can wax it if you wish but wax won’t give it any more protection than it already has.

So if one were to want to refinish the wood with an oil finish, how would you remove the current plastic-like finish?

Don't bother to soak it fully submerged in acetone. Acetone will not touch it.

Dean, acetone will not touch the repro finish. Not one bit.

I wonder where your remarks about acetone come from, from personal experience? Because it sure is not mine. And I regularly use acetone on all other sorts of finishes.

As you say, Heavy duty paint stripper will even hardly touch it. That will soften it some and then it has to be scraped off and finished with sand paper.

In regards to the question from the original poster. There is no point in using wax on a catalyzed urethane finish. It will not really do anything. Positively or negatively. It woukd just be a waste of your time applying it.

I'll let my heirs worry about any desired refinishing of the wood on my Parker Repros. I was just curious how one might strip the factory finish on Repros.

You're right Brian - I stand corrected... I was remembering that I soaked mine in acetone for days but I had forgotten that the acetone hadn't touched it. I finally applied a paint stripper, scraped it and reapplied the stripper and scraped again and repeated this process several more times until the result was satisfactory.

I have had luck with acetone using this method. I dip paper towels in acetone and wrap the paper around the wood and then saran wrap it really good. It keeps the solvent wet for hours. Could do with stripper as well.

Has anyone tried MEK on the Parker Repro finish? I’m digging into the past, but MEK used to be the go-to solvent for polyurethanes.

I have used MEK in the past. As ai recall it was not completely successful in removing the repro finish. But it has been a long time since I tried.
