2014 CHALLENGE CUP
It’s hard to believe, but this year marks the 11th Annual L.C. Smith vs. Parker Bros. Challenge Cup! Once again we look forward to enjoying the hospitality of our host Bill Kempffer and Deep River Sporting Clays. This will be the 15th year for the Annual Southern Side by Side Competition and Exhibition and is expected to have the best yet attendance of vendors, shooters and visitors to date. If you have never attended this event, you are really missing out. You can go to Deep River’s website at
www.deepriver.net to find out all of the events scheduled for the Southern SxS. Come on out and support your team, shoot, shop, and examine the largest collection of side by sides you are likely to encounter anywhere.
EVENTS
Our shooter participation numbers were up last year in both the Challenge Cup and the Hammergun Challenge events. The Parker team lost out to LC Smith by the slim margin of 3 points but prevailed in the Hammergun Challenge by winning the event for the first time. Keep up the good work!
Qualifying for the Challenge Cup (Event One) begins on Friday at noon, and continues Saturday until everyone that wants to participate has had a chance. Cutoff for the event will be when the last squad begins to shoot. Entry fee is $10.00, plus current membership in the PGCA. New memberships and renewals will be accepted at the sign-up table. Target fees apply in addition to that; last year they were $15.00 for each 30 target round. In 2012 Event One was expanded so that each participant will shoot 60 targets, two (2) rounds of thirty (30) targets each, to be shot back-to-back on two separate 5-stand layouts. Also, LCSCA and PGCA members will shoot on the same squads, with the organization represented by each participant noted on the registration form. This format will remain for 2014.
The Challenge Cup Teams for Event Two will be the top 10 shooters from each collectors association. This event is another 30 target event on a re-configured 5-Stand, with the Challenge Cup winner determined by the total score out of the possible 300 targets for each team.
Sunday morning is set aside for the Hammer Gun Challenge. Entry and target fees are the same as Event One of Challenge Cup. The simplified format calls for the total of the 10 best scores from each association to be used to determine the winner of the Hammer Gun Challenge Cup. The PGCA needs more hammer gun shooters in this event.
There are individual awards for the Top Gun, Runner-Up, 3rd Place, and 4th Place in the Challenge Cup, as well as High Lady and High Junior. This year trophies have been added for Runner-Up in Lady and Junior. These are awarded based on individual score, regardless of which make gun is used. Top Gun and Runner-Up awards are also given in the Hammer Gun Challenge Cup.
The PGCA continues to award our shooter with the highest score in the Challenge Cup, shooting a composite steel barrel gun, the Oscar Gaddy Award. If you are going to shoot a gun with composite barrels in the competition, be sure to note this on your sign-up sheet.
Plan now to participate in one or both events. If you don’t have a hammergun, don’t let that stop you, there will be plenty available to buy or borrow.
Volunteers are needed to help staff the sign-up table in the Parker/LC Smith tent. Please come by the table and sign up to donate an hour or two over the 3-day event. We don’t want anyone to be stuck at the table and miss out on all the activities available at Deep River – so, the more the merrier.

Thanks,
Carl Brandt,
