They wrote some great lines for Wayne, but remember he was reading a script. that line is a parphrasing of something said by his Sgt Striker character to a recruit in Sands of Iwo Jima.

one of my favorite lines was in Big Jake, where he reached up and grabbed hold of the guy playing his older son, took him off the saddle and over his head and into a mud puddle, then told him something to the effect of

if you haven't learned to respect your elders, you should darn well learn to respect your betters.
