Larry and all - it may still be speculative. In speaking with Mark it is probably inconclusive but checkered butts often appear on guns with the "no butt" notation.
I believe Mark has found no conclusive evidence of this.
The standard butt treatment on the Grade 2 hammerless was the hard rubber 'dog's head buttplate'.
