What Dean and Mills said - look what happened to Dick's Sporting Goods - our local NOVA store used to be a stand-alone HUGE 2-story building with its own dedicated parking area - also huge, easy and convenient. When the owners decided to no longer carry military knockoff style type guns (AR-15 platforms & etc.) or dedicated "sniper type" rifles (their words), in the wake of a string of shooting incidents, the dominoes fell quickly.
They had a great firearms and ammo section; sold everything from bricks of .22s to gun safes at very competitive prices. Sporting rifles and metallic ammo bit the dust first; in one unannounced (THANKS, DICK!!) 4-day selling frenzy they blew out all of their hunting and target shotgun ammo. Next went gun accessories and cleaning supplies. When they unceremoniously announced that they were "consolidating space and inventories" by moving into our local moribund (read soon-to-be-dead) Fair Oaks Mall, the bottom really fell out.
I don't know of anyone who is firearms oriented that shops there anymore. Anything we seem to need is readily available at current competitive prices (high though they be) at our local gun shows. If you're into Spandex and Under Armor, Dick's your boy; the last vestige of their connection to the outdoors is a medium-to-small hunting clothing section that is maintained for the lingering image, I imagine, of what they used to be.
