I have also seen a lot of these old boxes repurposed for any number of uses. Back then, people didn't throw away anything that could be used. It's a sentiment that seems to be lost today. I even save heavy wall cardboard boxes, but then, I'm older than air, and think that way.

My wife's grandfather kept the batteries for his Atwater Kent in this egg crate. I suspect it held 11 dozen because that was the size of the wood available.
