Shoot it at a pattern board set at distances that you customarily expect to shoot your selected gamebirds at. If it patterns too tightly I too, would suggest using spreader loads and it has been the experience of a few members here, myself included, that even out to thirty or thirty-five yards they will produce killing patterns with #8 shot.
