I've found in Montana that the hens sit tight until you almost step on them. Startles the bejeezus out of you when they bust out 2ft away! You can understand why when you see raptors cruising low looking for them. I've also noticed that when the raptor turns left they bust out to the right and by the time the raptor gets turned around and locked they are at least 200yds out and disappearing so fast that the raptor has no chance of catching them. That is a very cool thing to watch.
