The magazine
National Sportsman numbered the pages of all twelve Issues in a Volume from page 1 in Issue 1 to the last page in Issue 12. Here are a couple of A.H. Fox Gun Co. ads from 1912 --

American Field did the same for their actual text pages but in each Issue the advertising was mostly on pages numbered with Roman Numerals I to VIII.
