Western starting making 2 3/4 mag shells in the mid 1920's for use in the Super Fox but I believe most gun makers produced shotguns with 2 1/2 well into the 1930's. Not sure when 2 3/4 became the standard but I think 2 1/2 shells where made into the 1960's as I seem to remember buying them as a kid. By then 3" mag had also been introduced
