Rich I am headed out tomorrow morning for the opening day of my Coues Whitetail hunt. I will also be using a Model 70 a post 64 model ( Stainless and composite ] but with the control feed. The 300 WSM will be shooting a 180 gr handload. Way more than whats needed but it loves the load, and is my go rifle for deer, pronghorn, and elk.
I did look at a 1953 mod. 70 30/06 yesterday it had been used but well cared for. It had an period Lyman scope installed. I think that the nice figured walnut would be worth the extra weight. I need to go look at this gun again this afternoon.
Still hitting the 80’s here so bird season is still ahead of us.
Good luck on your hunt, and post some pictures.
