Frosty Alaska grouse hunt
Trigg and I trudged around for 3 days, walking up to 10.5 miles on our best day, and only got one bird, a spruce grouse. Did some good hunting though. I only took pictures of yesterdays hunt, which was the most interesting and in a logging area north of Fairbanks. I used my Repro 28 for this day; Trigg had a 20ga Guerini, or however you spell it. It was 10deg and snowing all day; the previous two days it was around 15-17deg. Yesterday's area was new to both of us and was recommended to us by Glen Holt, a forester and fellow grouse chaser and a real gentleman. We kicked up, I think, three ruffies in the three days, with no good shots presented - well, maybe one good shot had Trigg remembered to take his safety off before he pulled, or tried to pull the trigger....I'm certain nobody here has ever done that... It was a fun time though as we had not hunted together for several years. His dogs worked well, especially the black/white one, who is a real trooper and was still hunting pretty hard after 25miles two days ago. The other one was just along for the walk at that point, but perked up temporarily when we flushed a grouse not far from the car at the end of the day.
