Harold, this seems to be a relatively common problem with Ithacas... I have seen it on a number of them which were otherwise in good condition. It won't hurt it to continue to shoot it but know that it will only get worse. The barrel's safety has not been compromised. Repairing it properly entails having the ribs stripped and relayed by a pro.
