It may have as much to do with where the case is stored as anything

I have a Birmingham muzzleloader that came to me in a well worn case- no telling how long it was in there, the metal was dry and rust free. I put the gun, in its case upstairs and when I got it out after while there was rust- cleaned it - oiled it- put it away and the rust reappeared. after a couple go arounds, I cleaned the gun and set it on top of the case- no rust since

i don't have an issue in the safe- so I can only assume it was the combination of the case and lack of air circulation and the humidity in this house that was doing it
