FWIW , I was of the same opinion as you .
But in December I bought the two volume thing and just recently got a copy of the serialization book .
The two volume set is nice enough and yes pricey . There's an over abundance of info in those two volumes . However there's alot in there that a good many gun accumulaters aren't intrested in . And I understand a GREAT amount of effort was made in compiling all the info . And I did learn Parker had something to do in the steam engine industry back in the mid to late 1800's (I am kind of a steam engine person as well) . But I wasn't the one of those that was driven to compile all the info , so far be it for me to well you know .
The serialization book is about $35 and I think money well spent . A very large amount of compilation in this one as well just not on a so grand scheme .
