Wayne,

Look at your top photo. Just to the left of the cut/opening for the doll's head extension is the bolt that locks into the barrel lug. If you have access to the gun, move the opening lever which will retract the bolt. You will then see the trip pin that is not engaging in the bolt when the gun is opened and the lever is to the right. With a wooden dowel, press down on the pin. It should move up and down. If it does not, the small spring is broken or it is gummed up; then with the lever to the right, if you hook something underneath it, it should pull up and catch the bolt (part 15 in the diagram under technical info). If it works then, it can't be much to fix.

Compressed air or some lubricating spray on just the trip may fix the problem.
