black powder residue is hygroscopic and is not good for a bore, and causes rust if left for too long, but I think it gets a bad rap.
Pitting in barrels continued long after smokeless was the norm, much of the pitting we see can be blamed on corrosive primers that left salt compounds in the barrel that were more difficult to remove, and much more dangerous to metal.
