Reinforce what Rick said. Larry is very helpful and his book has several methods, beside serial numbers, such as barrel address, proof Mark's, and hammer type to narrow down the year of manufacture.

The challenge is they reused serial numbers over the years but by combining the serial number, barrel address and proof marks together it will allow more accuracy in helping you determine the year of manufacture.
