Hiawatha paper shotshells
 

Hello, this is Bruce again with another question. A friend gave me a few boxes of 16 gauge paper shotshells. They are in shell boxes that are red with vanilla color makings with "Hiawatha" on them. They are the usual red waxed paper high base shell with roll crimp in #4 and 6 lead shot. I tried these on pheasants this season, and they work great. I was interested on when these shells were made (1940s, 50s, or 60s) and if they were very common? I love the smell after they are fired, and they shoot pretty good. Thanks BW.

Hello Bruce, Hiawatha is a trademark of Gamble-Skogmo,Inc. They were sold by the Gambles department stores in the 1950's and 60's. If memory serves me right, Federal manufactured them. Most of my Hiawatha boxes are from the fifties.

I myself was just given a full box of Hiawatha Ace 16ga. 3drs.11/8oz.#6 paper, Go figure!Someone dated the box 9/29/66 price $3.24

Sears Roebuck also sold them in the 1950's and '60s.

Sears generally marketed paper hull shells under the names of Mallard, Sportload, Xtra Range or Ted
Williams.Most of the ted Williams shells are plastic.
Hawthorne was the name used by Montgomery Ward.
