Stock Marking

It would be my guess that between all who regularly view this forum we have collectively looked under a fair number of trigger guards. Has anyone seen a stock stamped with the large R shown in the picture below? Are there any thoughts as to its significance? Sorry for the poor quality picture.

factory replacement. Pointed one of these out to a buddy at PF a couple weeks ago. His had upgraded wood for the grade and he was questioning whether his stock was factory. It was. Sometimes the R is laying down, other times upright.

Yes. I had a GH with an obviously replaced stock with the "R" stamped next to the serial number. I thought it maybe stood for Remington, but replacement makes more sense.

Thanks Guys, that’s what I thought it might be. The gun lettered as a DHE 12 gauge with 30" barrels, capped pistol grip stock and no extras. The gun now sports a G grade straight grip stock and BTFE and the correct barrel loop. All items are numbered to the gun including a second set of 26" Titanic barrels with a splintered forend. There is no doubt in my mind that all this work was done by PB and I can't wait to shoot this gun in the Parker/Smith Challenge in a few weeks.:)

I am glad you found one with a beavertail forearm that you like.

Looks like a great shooting iron.

Thanks John,
I know it's about 4" too short for your liking but I think it will do just fine.

Funny you bring up stamping a under guard bows. I am just about to write a post on a similar topic.

Was there any evidence of a repair done to that stock? I recently fitted up an original DH buttstock to a gun that had previously been repaired. It also had an "R" stamped under than guard tang.

Brian,
I see no evidence of a repair but have not removed the stock from the frame. I will be shooting this gun at Addieville next month and you are more than welcome to examine it there.
