Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge
Has anyone ever tried using an ultrasonic thickness gauge to measure barrel wall thickness. It seems like it would be much easier than what everyone else is using and with some having a resolution of .0001'' I feel it is plenty accurate.http://www.wallthicknessgauge.net/TI...ess_Gauge.s282

Never mind it says a minimum radius of .5'' is needed.

I like my $100 gauge better.

I did not know you could get one for 100 I thought they were more like 400. You never know in 10 years the price of these digital devices could drop dramatically and if they could just lower that minimum radius a little it could be used for 10 and 12 gauges.

When you're looking for .001" accuracy, mechanical measuring devices are the way to go, especially when you're working with curved surfaces, and section thicknesses as thin as barrels. If you don't want to spend the extra money forr a Hosford, a Chubbs bore gauge and a micrometer is a reasonably good alternative., except at the intersection of the ribs.
