Just returned from grouse hunting in potter co. P.A. My only set and flush of the day ended like this...see the pickture....)-:

i have killed a few trees myself - but my favorite was a friend who swung on a grouse - fired and only to watch the unscathed grouse escape not knowing how he could have missed the easy shot - as he was looking after the grouse - the top of the tree that took the charge fell on him. the woods need thinning away and at least you had a nice day to tour "God's Country" as those pottering folks like to say. |
I've done a lot of "shotgun brush-hogging" myself but the most memorable was the 1" silver birch sapling that sacrificed itself by jumping between my speeding 150 grain .270 bullet and the 7 point buck's heart. :crying:
I even saved the 9" section of the sapling and plan to mount it on a nice walnut plaque up on the wall where my antlers are proudly displayed. |

Dean,
I thought I had the big 8 pt in the bag, when I heard the big thud! This hangs in my gun room. Jeff |
.....Jeff, my cousin Tim did that with his bow but on a smaller sapling. The arrow split the sapling and went almost all the way through but hung up on the fletching.

While hunting Eland in Africa I had a similar experience. I fired a shot with my 375 H&H at an Eland which should have fallen to the ground immediately. The PH, trackers and I looked for over an hour for blood and hair or any evidence of a hit with negative results. We walked back to where I was standing and tried to recreate the shot. It was then that one of the trackers discovered a 375 caliber hole through the only small tree that was standing between me and the Eland. A few days later I had another chance and killed one without help from intervening brush.
