Herzog's Shooting Prowess

We have heard much about how this or that person gets a double on quail, grouse or what have you, a double being two birds in the air dead with two shots.

A doubles pin for Charlie!

Well I want you fellows to know you don't hold a candle to my buddy Charlie Herzog. He does two with ONE SHOT! Dead in the air!

Obviously a squirrelly shot.

I don't think tree rats with a shotgun count:nono: Last weekend a friend with his new Parker VHE 16 got two Grouse on the wing with one shot! Now thats a double.

Charlie should know that the appropriate weapon for Squirrel is an accurate .22:bowdown: :rotf:

Isn't 2 birds w/ 1 shot called a 'Scotch' double I assume either as obviously whisky induced or more likely, and safely, some one was too cheap (i.e. Scot) to want to shoot twice?

I know in the grouse crowd a true double requires a pair in the air (simultaneous or nearly so flush) killed with 2 seperate shots. They are a snooty bunch in the coverts. Probably only drink single malt- none of that plebeian blended stuff.

Any any rate I join in a hearty congrats!!

I don't know about a Scotch double but the night befor Jack Daniels stock shot up as we toasted our canine friends that had left us. If I wasn't there I'd never believe it. A covey of young birds flushed and two dogs each returned with a bird.

After hearing that two birds with one shot qualifies for the "Doubles" board, the board takes on a new quality in my mind. It's a fun thing, I hope.

Bruce what grade is Mr. Herzog's squirrel gun? A? AA? From the hull I assume he used a twenty. Do you know his preferred choke / shot size combination for shooting doubles on squirrels?

Bruce Day 09-21-2012 07:37 PM

Its a Trojan A-1 Special. 20ga, I don't know what chokes or shot size, but its the same that works on cats.

Do you know if he uses his Setter when he hunts squirrels? Does the dog point them or tree them? Who trained his Setter to hunt squirrels? Did he retrieve them to hand?

I am surprised that he would use the same gun on cats and squirrels. It would seem to me that one would have one gun for hunting cats and one for squirrels. In Texas cats don't hold very well for pointing dogs so it would seem that a cat hunter would use a tightly choked twelve. Now I admit I never hunted cats but just speculating. Could you find out for me? Hunting cats could possibly be something we (me and the dogs) could do in the off-season. Neighborhood is overrun with them.

Bruce, dare you talking about house cats, or bobcats and cougars
