California Deer

This is not a Parker picture. This young man works for the local Cat. Dealer's repair division. He and his father come out and do tractor repairs and dirt work for hunting privileges.

They even ripped 100 acres last year and didn't charge a penny....we now have a beautiful new walnut orchard.

Anyway, Robert has been hunted for several years and keeps coming up short waiting for 'Big Mo'. This year Robert decided to take a normal sized buck (150 #) and call it good. As you can see, these coast range deer have a curved rack and not very thick. The meat is very mild and sometimes tastes more like gamey lamb.

Most guys come out to hunt and you don't hear from 'till next season. I always look forward to THAT call.

I've included some pictures of the new walnut orchard, my neighbor's kids, and the crop duster hitting the rice once more.

Are you west of Colusa or are the hills the Sutter Buttes ? Pretty country out there, its still old California .

Bruce. Our location is west of Colusa and south by 40 miles, but looks just like the area near Colusa. Rolling hills with oaks, wild oats, and seasonal streams.

The Sutter Buttes are very scenic and hold nice deer for the lucky few who own land there. You might know of the Butte Sink....a highly desirable duck area next to the Buttes.

Have you spent any time hunting out this way?

That's how our whitetails taste here in the Northeast, almost regardless of age.

Dean, I didn't know that about whitetail deer. My comment was contrasting the relative taste difference between our small coast range deer and the much bigger Mule Deer.....which don't taste as good (I'm told).
