Remington Primers
 

My supplier cannot get Remington 209s, and when I do find them they are outrageously expensive. I load 18 grs. Claydot under 7/8 oz. in Remington hulls with STS 209s at about 6,000 psi. According to the data its a middle of the road load. I recently started substituting Winchesters for this load, and Alliant says that is OK, but I don't know the pressure. Winchesters aside, is there a better substitute for Remington 209s? Thanks.

Ed, I had the same scenerio happen here in CT. I did what you did...I switched to Winchester and my PSI stayed very close to what I had with the Remington STS primer. Winchesters are a hell of a lot cheaper too!

I agree with Dave. I'm loading 17.0gr Clays (Claydot is a clone of Clays), 3/4oz 7 1/2's with WW12L or Fed12SO wad in either a AA or Rem. case and the WW209 primer. What a mild load, clean burning and it crushes targets. I've found no difference in performance in either hull. Pressures are in the low to mid 6000 range psi. I've always liked the old AA hull but STS's are the nicest looking when reloaded. Don't overlook the Rem. green Gun Club hulls. They are great to reload. Bottom line is if I have Rem209 I use them, if not WW209 are perfect substitutions.

I use Gun Clubs also, but the Win 209s don't always seat flush. That does not happen with the STSs or Nitros.

A few of us have been substituting the Win. 209 with the Fiocchi at a 115.00 a case (5000) I think.

I checked some of my Gun Club reloads and all my WW209's are flush. Don't know why yours won't seat flush. What machine are you using?

I had the same problem of failure to seat Win 209 primers flush w/ the Gun Club case. I use an OLD Mec 600. I put 2 small (thin) washers under the primer station ram and they seat perfectly. Might work for you.

The Cheddites are even cheaper. Through our supplier they're $105/5000 where the Win are $145/5000 - the Rem were $185/5000. Remington [ through the grape vine ] isn't making any reloading supplies right now - they're too far behind on military contracts. I've been useing the Cheddites for a couple of years with zero problems.

I use a MEC 9000 and have solved the problem by lowering the powder drop tube about 1/8". Primers seat flush now.
