More 2 7/8" 10 gauge loads
My quest for more reloading information for the short ten continues. I found some more loads not included in spreadsheet posted earlier including a couple for ITX shot. The one ounce loads are screamers and some of the loads published are high pressure. I do think given the velocity and pressure powder charges could be reduced for use composite barrels. I will update the spreadsheet I posted earlier and repost it.

Hey Pete!
Thanks for doing this. From the ITX loads listed on BPI data this one looks like the lowest pressure. While not "low" pressure I'm going to try it in my #3 Frame Damascus Parkers. One could reduce the powder by a grain or two to lessen the pressure and velocity. Note: Any gun that I'll shoot the below load in will of course have barrels in good condition with adaquate barrel wall thickness! L0AD# 110805-3291 (Perfect Duck) HULL: Federal 10ga. 2 7/8” PRIMER: FED209A PROPELLANT: IMR SR7625 34.0 Grains WAD: VP100 SHOT: 1 1/4 oz. (547 gr.) ITX #2(Mallard) (#4 smaller ducks) BUFFER: none ROLL CRIMP: ROLL with COS12 as the over shot card Result: PSI 9700 FPS 1395 |
I sent an e-mail to the "Curmudgeon" at Ballistic Products asking him to keep in mind there is a growing cadre of short 10 gunners looking for low pressure loads here at the PGCA and if he/they provide testing of reloads for pressure and velocity.
Mark I believe you will find a 10% reduction in powder will result in about a 10% reduction in velocity but will also provide close to a 20% reduction in pressure. At least that has been my limited observation when I can compare published data for lead loads. |
Pete,
I can live with 1250 FPS at 8000 PSI... :) Mark |
Here is my answer from the Curmudgeon at Ballistic Products.
"BP has a number of "shorty" 10-GA loads. They are scattered about in the various subject manuals... lead, ITX etc... C fires his Ithaca SXS 10 2 7/8" at almost anything... prefers PB, SR7625 etc. powders as they supply consistant presures and higher speeds wiht light loads in the wide bore. The VP100 equiped with "springy" crush section provides consistent (test to test) levels of both speed and pressure. With ITX shot the Short-10 runs other combinations of the map. A wonderful duck & pheasant cannon! At this point the BP lab time line cannot perform special (individual) testing. The facility is running at maximum effort. BP has the largest library of loads on anyone in the industry (pushing some 7,000 now...) But if you let C know the area that you are looking for (and includes products the BP has an interest in) C can sometimes slip the request into the mix. C" |
it just keeps getting better for the ole ten...thanks pete charlie
