leather & canvas cases
the CSMC shipping issues thread got me thinking about this question.
I figured the folks here will have tried most of the cases out there, I have several old leather cases, LOM and such. I built a set of storage drawers/kennel base for the back of the new truck and planned them for using trunk cases. I was thinking of the CSMC/Galazan's version. http://www.csmcspecials.com/Canvas_T...se_p/c0075.htm Jeff's outfitters and several other dealers stock similar cases and they all seem to run about the same price. if you have had them - any differences, any one built better than the next? |
Both CSMC and Jeff's are nice.

I have several of Jeff's. I have had latches come off, the internal dividers come loose, the leather corners come off, the wrist strap come out. Generally disappointing but they are relatively inexpensive.
I have two of Galazan's. No problems. They do cost more than Jeff's. Best, Mike |
No matter how good any of them look, don't be thinking you can just put them into the airline system as baggage unless you make a very hvy cardboard cover and encase it in fibre tape. I've had the leather slit deeply, latches ripped off because they're all just nailed on and the nails aren't long enough to be bent over on the inside, and a wrist strap ripped right out of the carcass.... that all in one trip to Montana. When I travel with guns now I use my Americase, which would could likely run over with a D-7 without hurting the gun inside.

I don't use them for airline cases and never have.
I have used both brands for shipping guns to gunsmiths. The case was always wrapped in bubblewrap inside a card board boxed topped off by plastic peanuts. Some of the problems occured during these shipments. I also use Americase on airline trips. Best, Mike |
Thanks guys, looks like i'll go with the original planned CSMC
Like I said, they are going in drawers of a purpose built storage unit in the new 4Runner, never meant for airline use. In spite of anything you may hear, I am smarter than that. I too have an americase, but for international flying I much prefer the Tuffpak |
The Tuffpaks are incredible. Best I've seen for international travel.
