barrel removal question

Hello,
I have a question about removing the barrels on my parker shotgun. The gun is clean and opens and closes fine, but I can't remove the barrels unless I take out a screw under the barrel, and I don't think thats how it is supposed to work. The gun is an 1892 12 ga ph grade with twist barrels, a fishtail top lever, and number 1 frame. I took the gun to a gunsmith, he cleaned the gun, and said everything inside was good and original, and told me that the barrels are not removable on that particular gun, unless you take out that screw. I was wondering if I was told the correct information or not. If not would anybody happen to know what is wrong with it.
Thanks

try tripping the sears before removing the forend. the barrels should come off without removing any screws.

It is very possible that the cocking slide is sticking and not allowing the unhooking pin to come forward to detatch the cocking hook. As far as the gunsmiths advice goes there has never been a Parker hammerless gun made that needed the cocking hook screw to be removed to take of the barrels.

Steve:
While tripping the sears/tumblers may help you get the barrels off the frame, it is not a "fix" for your problem. The gun needs the attention of a good Parker gunsmith. Del Grego won't work on Damascus or twist barrel guns due to liability issues. But there are other Parker-savvy 'smiths cited on this forum that can handle the problem. I'd send the gun to one of them.

Dave is correct. I've never heard of a hammerless Parker that required a screw to be removed to dismount the barrels.

Best, Kensal

Thanks

I took the gun apart, and the unhooking slide was stuck. It took a little work, but now the barrels come off easy. Thanks for all the help.

One thing that can cause the unhooking slide to stick (apart from dirt or grime) is over tightening of the slide retaining screw. This is the very small screw in the side of the trigger plate on the front.
Not saying that this was the issue with your gun. Just mentioning it.
If someone buys a new gun from a dealer or otehr party that does not know better, who knows. They could have done some taking apart and "cleaning" before putting it on the used gun rack. Overtightening the screw when putting back together. Then the new owner is stuck wondering why the barrels won't come off.
