TOWER SHOOT...

God willing, I'll be doing a pheasant tower shoot next week. What would be the appropiate chokes and how much ammo will I need? Also what shot size?
I'll be using RST's. thanks...

Angel - It depends. Choke selection depends on the layout of the shoot. Typically I/C and Mod will work fine. However, remember that since the bird will be flying towards you, your first shot will be a greater distance - therefore, you will want to use the tighter choke as your first shot, and in the unlikely event that you need a second shot  you will have the more open choke for the closer bird.

Pen-raised pheasants being shot from the front don't need big medicine. Modest loads of #6 shot will be fine.

Regarding number of shells - again, it depends. To try to get a guess on the number of shells, divide the number of birds being released by the number of shooters. That will be an approximation of birds you should be shooting at. Assuming two shots per bird, that would be a minimum number of shells. I'd double that number,

Remember that in many instances, after the driven portion of the shoot you will go out on a walkup hunt for those birds who survived the gauntlet. A chance to shoot another gun, and burn some more powder!

Enjoy!

Big D, thank you for the advice. Especially on that first shot.

Tom Carter & I participated in a pheasant tower shoot last Friday. I shot a D grade 10ga underlever and Tom shot his B grade 10 ga underlever. We both shot about 50 shells of 1 1/4oz #6 at 1200 f/s and smoked em good. My D was mod and full and would shatter a pheasant at 60 yards. I hope you have as much fun as we did!!!

Thanks David. I was thinking about my Mod/Full choked 16 ga.

Hi Angel:).
We do not have tower shooting in the UK but we do have high birds.
I use a 20 bore with 1/2-1/4 choke with 25grams No 6 or 7 shot and it works
very well for me. Hope you get some good sport.
All the best Dave.:bigbye:
