First Woodcock

Absolutely Beautiful October day today in Beautiful OHIO! My pup Fern found her first woodcock on our season opener. It is so fun to watch the connections happen. Hope to find some grouse up north soon. Parker 28 gauge VH helped.

Beautiful setter, Rick!

Congratulations on the success. How old is your pup?

Rick Roemer 10-17-2026 11:45 PM

Rick I’m glad to see you have taken on a setter. Any GBE fan should. Where is she out of?

Nothing better than your own dog, a good gun…in home coverts. Congratulations.

Nothing better than an English setter on point. Imho. No offense to anyone and any other breed. I grew up with setters and they're just in my blood.

Fern is a DeCoverly setter. She is the fourth we’ve had. I’ve been very pleased with them over the years. She is much faster than any setter I’ve ever had (not necessarily a good thing but I’m always learning ) Got into some more woodcock today. I hope to get up to your area at the end of the month. And yes I am a huge GBE fan. I love to read and he speaks our language. I think I own all of his offerings.

Congrats Rick and beautiful dog! LOVE the name!

Rick Roemer 10-19-2026 10:40 AM

Thanks Andy, the name took a while. I always put a lot of thought into that. We picked this pup up during the past winter storm - which was named Fern. I didn't even know they named winter storms. Our daughter also lives in Ferndale, Michigan so it seemed like a fateful suggestion! I also love names that have to do with the foliage or otherwise nature inspired.
