Info for GH 98974

Have GH 12ga.The serial # say's the shotgun was from 1900 but it has 1910 D4 Turkish Damascus barrels serialed to the shotgun with the new locking insert. Would the book show what grade damascus the shotgun left with in 1900? https://i.postimg.cc/3N7q7JPb/DSC02563.jpg

The serial number does not show in the Serialization & Identification book, but even if it did it would not say what grade of damascus the barrel was. I'm sure it would have been listed as D2, which would signify a grade 2 gun (GH) with damascus barrels.
How do you know the barrels are from 1910?

Generally, when a gun was returned for any repair after 1910, the Brothers P added the bolt plate and the new-style bolt. My 1889 Quality GH has the 1910 bolt and bolt plate.

And there would have been no charge for the bolt and plate replacement. If you were able to get a research letter on that gun there would be no mention of that service.
My GH SER. no. 79355, now a GHE, made in 1893, went back in 1913 to be fitted with ejectors. That addition is recorded in my letter as a $25 service but there is no mention of the 1910 bolt and bolt plate which it has and was probably done at the same time.

It isn't unusual to find a grade 2 gun with D4 barrels, D4 being the damascus grade, and not to be interpreted as a damascus barreled grade 4 gun.

The 1910 bolt bite only means that the gun went back to the factory for some sort of work after 1910. Parker did this upgrade to every gun that came back after that point. It does not mean that the barrels were replaced.

A research letter MAY show record of the return.

Chuck Bishop 01-24-2026 04:05 PM

Brian and Dean are correct. Parker would automatically put in the new bolt and plate on returned guns for repair. The order book would say "comb bolt" stamped in the repair order. Some repair order book entries would show this but most do not. If the record states "comb bolt", then it's put in the letter. There was no charge for this upgrade.
