Quail

Have really come to love quail hunting, and can understand how my friend Garry has fallen for it. The first picture is Fancy on point with her daughter Doodle backing. That was the third of my three bird limit, found 2 coveys. The gun is my Scottish G. Forrest 20 ga hammer gun with 30 in cyl/cyl brown Damascus barrels. It weighs in at 5 lbs 8 oz, a true wand to carry. It also has a second set of 30 in fluid steel barrels cyl and full.

Wild quail turn on a bird dog like no other bird! My Brittany, Sadie, used to grin. Saw a lot of that grin when we hunted the Eastern Shore quail back in the 80s!

Nice Harold. Joe had it right when he said his dog grinned. I've hunted every bird available here in the east and a few out west but nothing makes me grin like a good quail hunt and watching your dog get that whiff of a covey. Just to make it real sporting try to just pick out cock birds on the rise.

Good job, Fancy and Doodle! (Oh, and you too, Harold:))

It looks like WV's program is working and you're getting some quality time with your pups and some of those nice guns of yours. Daryl may be able to pick and shoot cock birds only, but I'm old and feeble and feel lucky to not have a heart attack when a covey gets up so close I can feel the breeze from their wings. What a great day to chase birds with good dogs...and take a few using a gun you love.

Keep us posted, Harold.

It's not as hard as it sounds Gary.

After more than 50 years of chasing wild Bobs on both sides of the Mississippi and Mason-Dixon Line, 60-75 days a season, it may be too late for me to be able to accomplish this feat, but, hey, I’ll keep trying. :banghead:

Seems like my take is always 1 cock bird and 2 hens, don't know if I could distinguish the two on a covey rise in this thick cover. May try tomorrow, taking my son, but weather does not look promising. Baled out today in heavy sleet at 35 degrees, turned around after getting half way there.

Wow what a neat little hammer gun! I love the wood extension vs a pad

Easy to tell the difference in hand, but on a covey flush with birds going 360 degrees, I think my eyes cross!

Try picking a cock from a hen on a woods covey.
