New to me GH 12 Ga mfg 1899
 

Good morning, just picked up a 12 gauge GH manufacture 1899 on a number 2 frame. It appears to be an overall really nice original condition and well cared for. It has 30 inch barrels with a very vivid Damascus pattern, and mirror bores. It is on face and locks up like a vault. The receiver has some small traces of color but is mostly a nice even patina. The stock appears to retain the original finish with no cracks or chips and checkering. The butt plate is 100% intact with no chips or cracks.

I would like to get some opinions of the gun an approximate value for insurance purposes. This is my third Parker so I’m kind of new to the game. i’m looking forward to using this one in the field this fall. Thanks for any input in advance.

I think it is something that is discussed in most collector activities. Watch Antique Roadshow. On almost every item, they give a range of values and then end with "For insurance purposes I would insure it for at least $_____, where the number is at least 50% more than they just appraised it. It makes the owner smile more and probably indicates the amount of questionable activity that occurs during an insurance claim by both the owner and the insurer. If you are really going to insure it, much depends on the policies of the insurer and the process they go through on a claim.

If you bought the gun at an open sale or in an auction, the answer is already known as mentioned. In a case where you bought it from an individual and you believe you paid well under market value, then about the only thing that will satisfy the insurer as a base will likely be a written professional appraiser. You have to remember that in the event of a loss, you likely won't have the gun available for an appraisel at that time. The original purchase price is going to form the basis of the settlement and you will need some proof of that. Unless I am mistaken, the same will be true of the IRS on the loss. Basis is basis, and you don't realize gains until you sell.

Thanks for the advise . I keep track of a list of values of my guns in the advent of my death my Wife has some idea of the value of my collection when she sells it ( and she will ). I’m carful not to let here see that list before my death . I don’t want her weighing the idea of offing me before my time ��


That being said . It’s nice to hear opinions members here as what they think of the gun and its condition (or lack of) . Like I said I’m very new to Parker’s and I value the knowledge base here. The gun was part of a multiple gun purchase that I made at the time.

Unless you want to pay the additional cost of a 'Stated Value' policy, most insurance will only cover what you can document. Most times when I see these posts, the buyer obviously knows what he paid for it and what changed hands is the accepted method for value of That item. A GH on a 2 frame is perhaps one of the most common Parkers on GI, GB, or any of the gun sites.
As Art says, Road Show 'appraisers' throw that bone out there to put a smile on the owners face, which irks the hell out of my wife, who retired after 50 years in Commercial insurance. It borders on fraud unless independent, actual appraisals support the higher value, which begs the question, why give it a lower value if the higher value is real?
Don't forget what Gene Hill said " My biggest fear is my wife selling my guns for what I told her I paid for them."
