Pad on DHE
What recoil pad should i use on dhe made in 27
|
The real red Silvers made in England looks the best .
|
For that time period I believe the Hawkins Heart pad is most appropriate and would have been most often used by factory.

Recoil Pads
Recoil Pads -- Going through many of my old catalogues -- Burkhard's, A.F. Stoeger, E.K. Tryon, etc -- I don't find the NOSHOC pad among their offerings until the mid- to late 1930s. I realize the NOSHOC pads have the June 6, 1922, patent date, but I don't find them listed in any of the old catalogues I have. In the 1920s the pads generally listed are the Jostam Anti-Flinch, Jostam Air-Cushion "Silvers Pattern", Jostam Sponge-Rubber, and another "Silvers Pattern" recoil pad by Goodrich. The earliest appearance of the Hawkins pad I've got is the 1932 A.F. Stoeger Catalog, which also offers the Ithaca "bridge trestle" pad.
The Jostam Anti-Flinch seems to be the pad I find as original on more mid- to lower grade American doubles then any other. They seem to grow more patent dates as the years go on -- Dec 29, 1914; Oct 12, 1915; Sept 20, 1927; so one has to check the patent dates to make sure none are newer then the gun you want to apply it to. |
My copy of a 1920 Sporting Goods Dealer shows a Hawkins patent dated 12-16-19, for a pad. I remember that to be the diamond pad according to what I recall about the pictures. I like the Hawkins diamond or heart pad for a twenties Parker. The Hawkins pad with the straight perforations is not seen on original guns as far as I know.

Called Galazan the hawkin pad they have is 6" long and my stock is only a little over 4 1/2 inches. Will this pad still fit withought getting into the diamonds?
Thanks, David |
Probably not. A good original pad for a small butt Parker from the twenties is the Galazan NO-SHOC repro. An original NO-SHOC is just as good. The hole separation is 3" and the plugs are small. Small size Hawkins pads are hard to find and I don't think they have been reproduced.

I put a NO-SHOC on the butt of a short stocked DHE 20 gauge and it raised the value of the gun at least $1000. It is a beautiful pad. The Lovely Linda's DHE 12 gauge skeet configured gun came to her with a NO-SHOC that looked very original.
