Sad Day Reloading
I've used Clays, Universal Clays and International Clays for the last 20 years and yesterday I finished my last pound of International Clays . I've used the following load for my 12 gauge damascus Parkers and Fox Shotguns:
19.0 grs. of International Clays RST 2 1/2 Hulls 7/8 Oz of 7.5 shot CB 6100-12 Load produces ~ 1200 FPS with light recoil. Any suggestion for different powder? I'm hoping 7625, Universal or Clays will work has I still have several 8 pound containers of of these powders. |
I shoot nothing but 3/4oz in every gauge and in the 12 I use Extralite if you can find it but that has become scarce and more expensive. Hodgdon's Titewad has filled the bill quite nicely. Cheaper and more available.

Hogdgon gives a Universal load for 7/8 oz 12 ga in a chedite 2.5” shell. They use to have more loads listed so I don’t know why they only list 2. Maybe you can start from here.

I use Clays exclusively in my 8 gauge 1 1/2 ounce loads . I also use Universal Clays and International Clays in the 8 gauge for 1 3/4 ounce as well as buck ball and slug loads in the 8 . And no more than I load the 8 gauge I have enough to last me .

That sucks. I’m so over these powder shortages. Start hunting up estate sales. I crushed it last summer on one. Got a few lbs of 7625, 800x, 700x, and blue dot. I see you are a Texan if you live close to Ft Worth and want some 700x I would trade for some powder you might have that I need. I hope you find a recipe that works.

Thank you for the trade offer,

I'm hoping with several of your suggestion my new load will be the following:
RST Hulls 7/8 oz BP CS 21 Short Wad Cheddite Primers 21 grs. of Universal Hulls are on the way from BP and I soon be loading and fine tuning the load. Thank You. |
Jeff,
I lived in Metro Phoenix for years with all the retired Shooters and over the years made many great acquaintances at Ben Avery, Rio Salado and Tucson Trap and Skeet and as they aged and stop shooting purchased a LOT of reloading supplies. I'll bet 90 % of my primers, shot, powder and wads were bought through these connections. Some stuff I'll never utilize but still have 12 pound kegs of 7625, several 12 pounders of Clays and Universal Clays, 16 pounds of 700X and over 20,000 primers. It's been my experience the guns and reloading presses sold quickly but multiple times reloading supplies ended up in estate/garage sales or I'd get call from the widow/children about purchasing the supplies. I believe as we move forward in the anti-gun/shooting world our reloading supplies will be a continued struggle to source. |
You might as well check your powder inventory and go on a reloading site and find loads that match your powder supply. If you think you can find Clays, International Clays or Universal Clays you are going to be very disappointed. It will be a long time until they become available again unless you stumble across some in a auction or garage sale, etc.
Why are you only loading 2 1/2" hulls? Should be able to use 2 3/4" in your guns. |
