A classic Jack O’Connor story about how some of his best quail hunting happened quite by accident.

I suspect that picture was taken in Scotland as O’Connor seems well on in years in that picture . If my memory serves he was out of AZ in the 30’s .

Thanks for posting that story. Reminds me of Baja in years gone by. :)

Gotta ask, what was the point of the photo of Jack shooting a Winchester Model 71 in a quail hunting article?

In the October 1965, Outdoor Life, Jack penned an article on the 20-gauge, with this better quail picture --
Attachment 122163 In the 1965 article he describes getting that 30-inch modified and full 20-gauge and states it was an L.C. Smith ejector gun. Attachment 122164 He then goes on to discuss his quail and duck shooting with it and even killing a turkey with it. He then states he did some of his best 20-gauge shooting with it. Attachment 122165 Then goes on to say it was an all-wrong freak and spends the rest of the article extolling the virtues of his 26-inch barrel Model 21s!?! I found a couple of boxes of 1950s to 70s Outdoor Life when cleaning out the house where I grew up. I thumbed through all of them and then put all but this issue out at the gun club where other geezers snapped them up. |
