3 inch 16 gauge doubles
 

I had asked a question earlier about manufactures who produced a 3 inch chambered 16 gauge. I want to thank you all for the answers. I just have one question, as there does not seem to be very many of these double barrels produced by the main manufacturers, why would an ammunition company make 3 inch 16 gauge shells when the shotguns were so rare? Thanks again.

In 1916, Rem-UMC charged $5.00 per thousand for their extra length 16-gauge ARROW shells (2 3/4-, 2 7/8- or 3-inch), when their heaviest 16-gauge shells, 2 3/4 drams of bulk smokeless powder, or 22-grains of dense smokeless powder such as Infallible or Ballistite, pushing 1 ounce of shot listed for $49.50 per thousand in the "standard" length 2 9/16-inch case. For Winchester's LEADER, also in 1916, the basic 2 9/16-inch shell was a bit cheaper at $47 per thousand, but the extra length versions were $5 per thousand extra.

In 1927, the Peters HIGH VELOCITY 16-gauge load in the "standard" 2 9/16-inch case was $53.50 per thousand, and in the extra length 2 3/4-, 2 7/8- or 3-inch cases were $63.50 per thousand.
