Sad news .......
 

It is reported by a gunsmith on the DGJ forum, this morning, that Jim Kelly, owner and operator of Darlington Gun Works in Darlington, SC has passed. It was also reported that his wife had recently passed as well. Many on here likely will recall Mrs. Kelly's role in the shop handling paperwork, etc.

Jim had led a colorful life as a younger man when he served as Gen. Curtis LeMay's personal gunsmith, and an armorer in the USAF, in France, during WW II. He trained under French doublegun 'smiths during that stay as well.

An icon has passed from among us. RIP, Mr. and Mrs. Kelly. Thank you for your kind service to the "community". Also, condolences to his nephew, Taylor I believe, who has taken up Jim's mantle and has become quite impressive in his knowledge of vintage doubleguns.

These were salt of the earth people. I dealt with Jim many times over the years. Always a delight to talk with, so many interesting stories. Stan is right. Taylor, although quite young, learned from the best and I believe the business will continue to survive and prosper. God bless Jim Kelley and his wife Dianne.

Too many great and decent people are passing away these days

For years on the way home from Hilton Head my family would stop in the shop and stay about an hour with Jim and Mrs Kelly. O the story's we heard from both of them. RIP and THANKS for the memories.

This is a good read.
I was looking for his story “Coffee Can Parker” about a gun that arrived in parts to his shop. Most of it was in a Coffee can. I can’t seem to locate it, but remember that it was a good read too.

I have spent many wonderful hours with Jim and Dianne. I’m still in shock. According to the obits, they will be buried together tomorrow, Friday, in Darlington.

I will likely do business with Taylor in the future, but the 2.2 hr. ride to DGW will never again be the same. However, I am grateful for the years past knowing them.
