So, Doodle is becoming a versatile English Setters! I was carrying my VHE 20.

Now, the rest of the story. Doodle hit a point below a sorghum field. Walked in expecting a rooster, when this guy raised his head up. Was immeadiately worried that it might go after me or the dog, before I realized it was hurt. It was youth deer gun season, plus bow season was in, and assumed the buck had been wounded and couldnt get up. From the looks of things, it must have been there all night. It tried to get up, but it's hind quarters seemed paralyzed.
I could have finished it off with the 20 ga loaded with 6's, but walked back to my truck to grab the Walther P22. I had a crossbow in the truck and a buck tag, so legally I could have put it down with the crossbow and tagged it. Really didnt want to have to say I got this unique buck by walking up to it at 6 feet and putting a bolt in it, plus I doubted that the meat would be any good at this point . At the truck, a father and son came by on a quad, and the boy was hunting the youth season. I showed them pictures of the deer, and the young boy was excited to take it. I led them back to the deer, and the boy put it down.
There was no evidence of a gun or arrow wound, or from fighting, so I believe it had been hit by a car and ran until it dropped there and couldnt get up. I had seen this deer several times this year and would have taken him in a heart beat during deer season. It also has a unique "unicorn " point.
I did shoot at 2 roosters today and got both.

You did a good deed I’m sure that young man will tell that story to his children.

My setters have pointed bedded deer on numerous occasions and bear on at least 3 that I recall. Does not surprise me a bit that Doodle nailed this one.

What a great thing to do for this young man. Nice buck. I bet he was happy.

In the first picture of the live buck it looks like something’s wrong with his left eye.

Gary, we also frequently get deer points...and wild turkey points, from our dogs -- but so far no bear points (one bobcat and several coyotes, though).

Years ago we hunted a local WMA the day before deer season. The dogs went on point and when I walked in to "flush," a cow elk got up and scared the pee out of me (figuratively:rotf:). We later heard on the radio that an elk had escaped a local elk farm and the Conservation Dept. was warning hunters to not shoot it during the deer season. I'll bet it died in some ditch with a slug in it and was never reported.

Harold, it was thoughtful of you to let that young man take that deer. I'll bet those antlers are saved for a lifetime.

That deer has been in some kind of accident. The pedicels were injured and thats how it got those funky antlers. I suspect the eye thing that Dean Mentioned was also caused by the injury.
