I had a Parker with me.....

I had the big 10 gauge loaded with OO leaned in the corner of the blind hoping one would walk by close. I passed on some does, finally just before dark this nice fat yearling buck came out, just too far for the shotgun. I brought the Stevens High Power .35 Remington into play and stopped him in his tracks. Not bad for an old man in coke bottle bottom glasses shooting iron sights out of a 100 year old rifle at 70+ plus yards.

I just had one day to hunt, I told myself I'd wait for horns till late afternoon then anything was game. First time I'd had a tag since 1993, I'm always too busy during deer season chasing the ducks.

Excellent eating. Like my dad used to say, You can’t eat horns. LOL.

He was behind a little brush pile, I could only see the very top edge of him so that's what I shot for. He flipped over backwards, kicked twice, and there he laid dead as a wedge. What's wild is the bullet actually hit nothing vital, didn't even knick the spine, though it passed real real close to it obviously. It was literally the shock of that thumping old school chunk of lead passing through his body that killed him. I'd forgotten how hard a .35 hits, I'd not fired it in 20 or more years.

Destry, congrats on a great day in the woods. Stevens lever guns are a unique design very smooth operating and kind of rare. I use a Winchester 1886 in 33 WCF that has ballistics similar to the 35 Rem and can attest to both their effectiveness.

my dad use to hunt with 2 guns a rifle and shotgun...one time he walked up on a older gent who was skinning a doe which was not legal at that time...the old gent went to swearing that deer had horns when he shot it..he thought because my dad had 2 guns he must be the game warden and that he had took some bodys gun away from them...my dad had to help the old man skin his deer before he would touch the deer again and all the time swearing that it had horns when he shot it...charlie
