Spacers

Andrew Sacco started a thread on here earlier about the use of beans as for lack of a better term a spacer . I read it and then proceded to state what I used for the same thing . About a month after that I was in the grocery store and bought a bag of the small red beans think they were less than a dollar . Anyway the stayed in my desk drawer at the shop , I had planned to try them in my 10 gauge loads at some point . Well earlier this week I ran out of 16 and 20 gauge 1/8' nitro cards so not wanting to stop until I loaded all my 10 gauge empties I pressed the red beans into service .

Initially my 1 1/4 ounce SR7625 load had one 1/8" nitro card in the bottom of the shotcup and I'd put a 10 gauge overshot card over the shot so my crimp was nice a flat . I'm quite anal about not wanting a concave or sunken crimp .

Anyway I tried putting 3 , 4 and 5 beans in the bottom of the shotcup and four in my loads gives me a very very nice flat closed crimp and no over shot card needed .

Why not use clover or brassica seed instead? That way you can establish a food plot too. Just sayin'.

Well now I thought a plot of red beans would do about the same thing :rotf: Plus they’re at the grocery store and I don’t have to go by the Co-Op

That's awesome Mike! Not bad for a rural PA guy ; ) I now use Pinto beans on a 20g load and it works pretty good!!! But that's really because lately I'm experimenting more with Latin foods. Were I to yearn for some Asian influence I might use some red beans. But for those who prefer to shoot guns with olive oil running through their blood, I am going to dry some Cannellini shelling beans this winter. Being a bit larger, I might have to unload them on those 8 and 10g dudes however.

Cheerios--plus I can flip the little treats to my setters while I reload.
