I've been working on assembling a collection of the blue & yellow boxes of Western Super-X shells. When the blue & Yellow boxes were introduced circa 1940 the chilled shot Load Numbers were prefaced with an S and Lubaloy shot loads and the 3-inch 12-gauge loads which came in the higher brass RECORD case were prefaced with a P. The shells featured a rolled crimp, the traditional Western knurled canular on the brass and the Seal-Tite wads --

By 1948 Western was transitioning to the Super-Seal Crimp, plain ringed canular and the Super-Seal Cup Wads --

in the 10- to 28-gauge shells.

In 1953 Western changed their load numbers. From then on the chilled shot loads were prefaced with SX and the Lubaloy shot loads were prefaced with an L.

However, so far the only 2 7/8 inch 10-gauge boxes I've found with the SX load number still have the rolled-crimp and the Seal-Tite wads, but the new style canular --

Do any of you have a blue & yellow box of Super-X 2 7/8 inch 10-gauge shells with the Super-Seal Crimp and the Super-Seal Cup Wads? They made the change on the 3 1/2 inch Magnum 10s. By the time they were into the plastic shells in the white boxes with the red Super-X logo the 2 7/8 inch 10 had the cup wads and the pie crimp.

I'm looking for a nice full blue & yellow box of 10-gauge 2 7/8-inch Super-X with the Super-Seal Crimp and the Super-Seal Cup Wads. I have such a blue & yellow box of the 10-gauge 3 1/2 inch, but I'm not sure if Western ever got around to updating such a slow mover as the 2 7/8 inch 10-gauge to the Super-Seal Crimp and Super-Seal Cup Wads until they changed to the yellow box.

Everything else from 28-gauge to the 10-gauge Magnum made the change to the Super-Seal Crimp and the Super-Seal Cup Wads in the blue & yellow boxes, except the 2 9/16 inch 16-gauge which got the Super-Seal Cup Wads but kept the roll crimp --

Here is a box you may be looking for... Do you remember the Ithaca 10?

Dave Noreen 04-12-2021 10:48 AM

Good to hear from you, Dave. I have that box. That is an early blue & yellow Super-X box from the 1940s with the Seal-Tite wads, roll crimp and the Western knurled canular on the brass. I certainly remember that No. 4E. Doesn't look like you've drug it through "the bottoms" too much!!
