DH engraving...

I never really compared different era engraving but I really think the early stuff is much better in this comparison.

Bottom is an early DH 2 frame 30 inch I posted about in a different forum.

Top is a later DHE 3 frame with 36 inch barrels I am thinking of buying.

Size comparison is evident as well.

Here are two more 3 frames only 13 years apart. The first a 10/12 bore 2BS from 1892 and the second a 12 bore from 1905. Both with 32 inch barrels.
The patterns certainly changed over that span of time. Earlier having considerably more detail.

With that understood - I cannot figure how you or anyone could get away from that 36" gun! Those opportunities are few and far between in my world.

A great deal of the differences we are seeing are due to the personal style of an engraver.
I’m sure ‘time’ was of the essence on the lower grades (4 and below) so an engraver could only spend an allotted amount of time on each gun.
