The Price of Buying Guns at RIAC just went up...
I drove up for the preview day at Rock Island yesterday. The very nice woman at the bidder number check-in informed me that RIAC is now collecting sales tax on all sales (because of the Supreme Court ruling). If you buy on site, that means another 8.5%, and if you have it shipped, they base the tax on your zip code and the state/local tax of your location. Ironically, and I don't know why, there is no sales tax charged for shipping to Missouri(!) -- we most definitely have sales tax here.
Not too much in the way of doubles from my vantage, but there were some very nice, historic items on display. Get your check books ready for tax time. |
All states have not adopted new regulations brought about by the "Wayfair" ruling of the US Supreme Court. The decision permits each state to review and expand the definition of substantial nexus within their state. The old rules required physical presence in a state to establish nexus. The Wayfair decision replaced physical presence with "economic" presence. I am sure MO will eventually get on the bandwagon.

Another great reason to be a member here and take advantage of some great deals being sold by members.

most if not all on line sellers now collect tax
even on private non company sales on eBay - i bought a lens from a guy who sold it because he wasn't using it - that was taxed the thirst for money by governments is never ending - i won't be surprised if they go after forum's for sale postings at some point |
The thing I fear is that FFL dealers will start collecting state sales tax on guns coming into them for transfer. I have heard some dealers do in fact do this already.

technically - at least in NY they should be- but in reality - under the new rules - sites like Gunbroker or Gunsinternational might be the first target to require collecting - but since you can pay the seller direct (as opposed to sites like Amazon or eBay where the site collects for the seller) it will be harder to enforce
if I buy anything out of state and bring it back to NY I am supposed to report it and pay sales tax on it - a tax guy here once told me if I replaced a battery or tires on my truck when out of state - that was taxable when I return home - so your concern is certainly justified |

No surprise there! My daughter lives in Seattle, so I am pretty familiar with the cost of living there!

But, no state income tax. Yet!!!
